The 82 mm mortar is a combat support weapon intended for use by infantry to destroy manpower and combat equipment with indirect fire. It features high rate of fire with a devastating effect on personnel, light armoured vehicles and field engineering facilities. The M82 mortar has a conventional design, with barrel recoil absorbed by a single recoil cylinder coupled with a circular baseplate.
